History of Smart Watch

The evolving nature of the technology has now created a new dimensional plain heading towards the direction of mobile and small gadgets with multiple functionality, giving birth to smart devices and smart watches. Smart Watches are primarily used for numerous reasons, fashion, trend, fitness tracking, synchronize data communication from other gadgets, media devices, communication gadget, health monitor, navigation tool and many more functionality.1

Existence of smart watches is debatable, however, it can be traced back to 2000, a prototype wristwatch from IBM that operated in LINUX with limited functionality which was later upgraded with many other features as  fingerprint sensor, accelerometer, vibrating mechanism running calendar, Bluetooth.

 

Microsoft in 2004 released Smart Personal Objects Technology (SPOT) smart watch that could display information’s at a glance such as weather forecast, time, and date.

 

Samsung in 2009 launched a colour LCD display watch phone s99102 with touchscreen capabilities that had Bluetooth and voice recognition capabilities for phone dialling and conversations. It was able to offer outlook email supports and music player with scratch resistance surface and colour screen. It able to send SMS, MMS and emails as well.

 

 

Sony Ericsson liveview in 2010, main functionality as an external Bluetooth display for android smartphone equipped with touchscreen interface operat3ing in android 2.x devices. It displays all the notification feeds from the Bluetooth paired smartphone with reply functionality as well from its 1.7 inch screen with limited functionality.

 

 

Omate based in hongkong and Shenzhen in 2013 claim to be the first smart watch with the full functionality of the smartphone w4ith 1.54 inch sapphire crystal glass display, 512 MB storage. 3 Megapixel Camera supporting 4.0 Bluetooth. It supports android 4.2.2 devices with 3-4 days of standby time and one day of intense usage. Omate offers a mini-SIM slot as well.

 

2013 is a milestone year for development activities of the smart watch where numerous companies such as Samsung, Sony, Toshiba, LG, Google, Microsoft, Blackberry, Apple, Motorola, Metawatch, Zen, Pebble and Acer engaged themselves in the development and launched. Kickstarter for the smart watches skyrocketed and exceeded the expectation of the supporter supporting the project.

In 2014 CES the year of  “Wrist Revolution” released and displayed varieties of smartwatches in big numbers. Some of the popular ones5 are Asus Zen Watch, Samsung Gear S, Motorola Moto 360, LG G Watch R, Pebble steel were the smart watches which mostly supported the android devices that varied in their physical aspect looks and their functionality, while the health tracker watches such as Fitbit, Jawbone, Gear Fit and Microsoft band surfaced as well.

 

In 2015, from the crowd, Huawei watch, Apple watch, Samsung Gear S2, Motorola Moto 360 2ne gen, Pebble time Round and LG watch Urbane are my favorites. Withings, Garmin, Fitbit blaze and numerous others standout with their functionality. The race continues to advance and upgrade, the existing one pushes to rectify the bugs in their system and even the modification of hardware and looks, and the launch of new ones.
